Our Work
RAAD is creating infrastructure that connects Deaf culture and addiction recovery systems.

Why This Work Matters
Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals face systemic barriers when seeking addiction treatment. These challenges are not caused by a lack of need—but by a lack of accessible systems.
Many treatment programs are not designed for ASL communication, interpreter access is inconsistent, and there are too few ASL-fluent providers. These gaps make it harder to enter treatment, stay engaged, and build long-term recovery.
RAAD focuses on addressing these barriers through coordinated, long-term solutions.
Our 5 Focus Areas
Workforce Development
RAAD is working to increase the number of addiction counselors who can communicate effectively with Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients.
This includes building pathways for ASL-fluent individuals to enter the recovery workforce and supporting training for those already in the field.
ASL for Treatment Providers
RAAD supports training for treatment staff in recovery-specific ASL to improve communication within programs.
This helps providers better engage with Deaf clients and create more accessible treatment environments.
Interpreter Expansion
RAAD is working to improve access to qualified interpreters in addiction treatment settings.
This includes supporting better coordination and availability of interpreters who understand recovery environments.
Access Funding
Financial barriers can prevent individuals from entering or staying in treatment.
RAAD is developing funding pathways to help individuals access care and support programs working to improve accessibility.
Recovery Center Vision
RAAD's long-term goal is to establish a Deaf-centered Recovery & Wellness Center designed specifically for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals.
This would provide an environment where communication access is built into every aspect of care.
